This process allows the designer the strength and lightness of aluminium along with the ability for thin sections (around 3.5mm) and a comparatively fast production process. The main alloy used for pressure aluminium die casting are LM24 for general-purpose castings (domestic products, engineering castings etc.) and LM6 for castings requiring thinner sections.

Weight range of castings would be from a few grammes to approx. 2.5 kgs.

Density of material 2.79 grms/cm3.

Further information on the most suitable alloy along with details of mechanical properties can be provided.

Gravity Die Casting

The gravity die casting process allows for much larger castings (up to approx. 15kgs.) and can offer much thicker sections.

Excellent casting integrity can be achieved and heat treatment, stabalisation and/or impregnation can further enhance both mechanical and other properties.

Gravity die-casting is usually associated with lower volumes than that of pressure die-casting and can offer much reduced initial tooling costs.

Tolerances and coring out details are not as good as pressure casting but good design principles can achieve very intricate castings.

Please refer to our technical service page for details regarding the choice of material.

Die Casting Materials

A brief summary of the most commonly used alloys is shown for your guidance.

ZINC

Usually used for high-pressure (hot chamber) die casting. With careful design this material and process can combine to give a very fast production process with complex shaped components.

LM4

Usually used for gravity castings.Examples of components would be, general engineering, gearboxes, switchgear boxes etc. Can be heat-treated to improve mechanical properties.

LM6

Used for more intricate castings, meter cases, marine castings etc. Good corrosion resistance and ductility. Can be used for pressure or gravity casting.

LM24

Used for pressure die-casting. Suitable for most general engineering purposes. Can be machined easily and used for more intricate pressure die-castings.

LM25

A gravity die casting alloy.Has good mechanical properties which can be further improved by the use of heat treatment. This alloy is used where strength, soundness of casting and corrosion resistance are required.

ZA27

A special purpose zinc/aluminium alloy that has good bearing properties.

Sand Casting

The sand casting process can be one of the most versatile casting methods. It can be used for the manufacture of prototypes as well as regular production runs.

In the main we use aluminium although other special alloys can be used.

This process can be used to prove the component design or where the initial projected volumes are going to be low and will not at this stage justify the higher tooling costs of gravity or pressure die casting.

Generally pattern equipment represents a lower initial investment cost but gives a higher component cost than using other methods of manufacture. However this may well be suited to smaller initial production batches to test the potential market prior to the manufacture of more expensive tooling
